Eating more fruits, vegetables may cut stroke risk worldwide
Eating more fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of stroke worldwide, according to a new analysis of 20 studies conducted in Europe, the United States and Asia. The American Heart Association advises the average adult to eat four to five servings each of fruits and vegetables daily, based on a 2,000-calorie diet. A diet rich in a variety of colors and types of vegetables and fruits is a way of getting important nutrients that most people don’t get enough of, including vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber.

In a study of 65 cereals in 10 different grocery stores, Cornell researchers found that cereals marketed to kids are placed half as high on supermarket shelves as adult cereals – the average height for children’s cereal boxes is 23 inches verses 48 inches for adult cereal.

Healthy midlife diet may prevent dementia later
Healthy dietary choices in midlife may prevent dementia in later years, according a doctoral thesis. The results showed that those who ate the healthiest diet at the average age of 50 had an almost 90 per cent lower risk of dementia in a 14-year follow-up study than those whose diet was the least healthy.

High added sugar intake ‘increases CVD mortality’
New research recently published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine suggests that individuals who consume high amounts of added sugar in their diet may be at increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease.According to the Harvard School of Public Health, the average American consumes around 22 teaspoons of added sugar a day – the equivalent to an extra 350 calories.

A new study published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine found that the average meal from independent and small-chain restaurants contains more than half of a person’s recommended daily calorie intake. On average, meals from such restaurants contained around three times the amount of energy that an adult should consume in a single meal.
